Close Finishes Mark Season-ending
Road & Track U.S. Sports Car Invitational
MONTEREY,
Calif. (October 6, 2003) - Fans attending this past weekend's
season-ending Road & Track U.S. Sports Car Invitational saw plenty
of close action, as three of the day's races were decided by margins of
less than one-half second.
Sunday's racing began with a large field of 33 historic stock cars taking the green flag. Ron Huber of Scottsdale, Ariz., drove his ex-Davey Allison #28 Texaco/Havoline Thunderbird to a narrow victory - 0.304 seconds - over Tom Klauer, who was driving the #2 Pontiac Grand Prix made famous by Rusty Wallace.
Craig Bennett of Brighton, Michigan, who drove a beautifully prepared 1971 Lola T-222, won the Vintage Can-Am race. He finished 2.157 seconds ahead of Peter Kitchak. Bennett's Lola also won the Road & Track-sponsored "Car We'd Most Like to Race" award, presented by Ed Abramson, vice president and publisher of the magazine.
In the FIA Manufacturers Championship race, Joe Nastasi of Long Island City, N.Y., drove his 1968 Alfa T33-3 to a 1.839-second victory over Bruce Canepa of Santa Cruz.
Porsche Club of America ran two races, each sporting large fields of 40+ cars and both producing nail biting finishes. In Group 1, Masuo Robinson took the checkered flag by a mere 0.111 seconds over Gary Boss. Robinson drove a 1970 Porsche 911R. In Group 2, Chris Wally, driving a 2000 Porsche GT3R, beat Bob Mahoney to the line by only 0.354 seconds in a 2000 Porsche GT3R.
Peter Kitchak of Excelsior, Minn., second-place finisher to Bennett in the Can-Am race, won the Klub Sport Challenge in a 1969 Porsche 911R, beating Josh Vargo's 1965 Porsche 911 by 6.146 seconds.
The final race of the day saw pole-sitter Kim Wolfkill of Newport Beach take the Ultimate Mini Challenge, edging Dion Pownall of Corona.
While the 2004 schedule of races at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca has not been finalized, the season is tentatively scheduled to begin in May with the return of the Road & Track Sports Car Invitational.
Confirmed dates in 2004 include the Honda Superbike Classic, July 9-11, and the 31st Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races, August 13 -15. Yet to be confirmed are dates for the CART Champ Car World Series and American Le Mans Series.
Tickets for the 2004 season go on sale in January 2004. Fans can get on the track mailing list by calling 1-800-327-7322 or sending an email to tickets@laguna-seca.com.
