Race Report -
General Comments. Sebring is always a great race with long
races and a classic road course. It is also probably the roughest track
on a car in the US. While it is smooth in some areas, it is very very bumpy
in others. So it is hard on cars, but a very very fun time. David and the
Moorespeed crew did a great job getting the cars ready as usual and the crew
we had (see the photos) was very good.
Klub Sport Race. We did very well in the first race of the weekend,
the Klub Sport race for 2 Liter displacement Porsches. 41 Cars !!!
started the race. We started from the second row and went to the lead
by the end of the first lap. We did not give it up during the balance of
the race. A full course yellow with 2 laps to go required another start with
the group bunched up. We "ran away from the field" in both cases.
Vintage Enduro. We could have done quite well in this race
if I would not have run out of gas. David Moore our crew chief said
we could go only 20 laps and I ran out of gas on the 21st trying to stretch
and extra lap. I tried to get back to the pits, the car stopped and
quit running. I was actually trying to drive it back on the starter
and when the gas drained down out of the foam in the fuel cell it started
and I had enough gas to get back. Unfortunately it cost us a great
deal of track position. A later full course yellow got us up near the leaders,
but we had 20 cars to pass to get back within reach. Realistically,
the best we could have done would have been 2nd overall and 1st in class.
We finished 3rd in class and 4th overall. And, the cars in front of
us all had lap times faster than we did.
Night Enduro. We qualified 2nd for the night enduro and started
outside on the front row. We won the race into turn one and led quickly.
The car that ultimately won, Jim Scott, got by us briefly and
we quickly repassed him and got out to a 20 second lead. We had the
race handily won until the motor expired, totally self destructed, 1.5 laps
from the end of the race. So we finished 2nd in class and 4th
overall.
Group 3 Sprint Race. Group 3 is a tough group for us to win, but
it is always very good racing. The reason it is tough group is that
we usually have the Lotus 23Bs in the group. We did, however, win our class
which was great.
