Here 6 Honda F1 cars create a great mobile scuplture. The cars
were delicately balanced and would move up and down as a small counter
weight under each car would rotate.

Charles March, the Earl of March. driving a Porsche 718 Formula 1
car from 1961 that was driven then by Dan Gurney and Jo Bonnier

Peter Kitchak with his Targa Florio winning 1973 Martini Porsche
RSR. The only Porsche production based car invited to
Goodwood this year and consistantly referred to during the event
as the Best 911 in the World.

In the assembly area with two Porsche 917s. A 917LH on the left
and a Gulf 917 K on the right. The Gulf car was driven by most of
the important drivers of the day and won many races.

A 3.5 liter v-12, 1993 Ferrari F93A. Ferrari was struggling at
the time and the best this car ever did was a third place in Hungary

Each car got an offical number plate for the event. Often they
were the model number of the car. This is the number we had on
the RSR.

A 1985 Paris Dakar Porsche 959 which was driven by Rene Mentges.
This car was normally aspirated and dropped out of the event with
mechanical problems.

The crowds were unbelieveable. The event was sold out with more
than 125,000 tickets sold. This was a view from just outside our
garage area.

a 1974 Lotus Cotsworth 76. 3 Liter V8.
The car was designed by Ralph Bellamy. Other than a 4th
place finish in Germany it proved quite unsuccessful
and was abandoned.

Mike Oppenheimer was in his element, collecting autographs from the
world's great drivers. Here, imitating the Earl of March, he
gives a royal wave to one of his biggest fans. (But he didn't ask
me to sign his poster???)

Wacky Racers were also present. Designed to entertain the kids
they were also used as shuttles the night of the ball.

biker's telling everyone it was time for dinner.

After going "across the pond" to get to the event, we took
this picture across the Earl's pond at the assembled crowd in formal
atire.

Chuck Haines with his wife joined our table at the ball. He
was there with his Eagle-Offenhauser Sugarripe Special that was
2nd at Indy in 1973. Bobby Unser drove the car at the event.

The show after dinner was worth the trip all by it self. A
combination of lights, water and fireworks never seemed to stop.
A history of racing was projected on a 200 foot wide screen
created by spraying water into the air.

Brent Hajek (center) and his frind "Ox" joined us at dinner.
Brent brought the 1963 Mercury Marauder that was raced by
Parnelli Jones . The car was the USAC chamion in 1964 and also
won Pikes Peak. See car photo below

Toad Hall's Peter Kitchak and his famous date, Patricia Kitchak.
They were married on year after the 1973 car that Peter was driving at
Goodwood was constructed.

The 1909 Blitzen Benz, Mercedes Benz. The car had a 21.5
Liter 4 cylinder motor that made 200 HP.
At the right is a better photo of the engine. In 1911 this
car set a world speed record of 228 Km per hour (141 mph) over a flying
mile.
Interestingly enough, the Mercedes mechanic working on the car
told me that it has been "restored" and spare pieces made in the US.

Charles March in the Porsche 718 which was entered by the Porsche
Factory.

Klaus Bischof, head of the Porsche Museum, was pitted next
to us and drove the Porsche 804 F1 car that gave Porsche
its only F1 win in 1962 with Dan Gurney driving.

Mercedes W196 and
sign autographs.

Near the entry to the Driver's Club was a Bently Thunderbolt with
a 27 liter V12 engine that makes 750 bhp and 1550 lbs of torque.

On the way to the driver's club was a famous
old Ferrari, note the red carpet on the left. for the driver's to walk
on.

Fernando Alonso was there to drive on of the current Renault F1
cars. He always had a crowd around him (and a body guard)

Lined up with their own bikes and their original leathers were many of
the great Motorcycle racers of all time.

David Coulthard driving the Tyrrell-
Cosworth 006. Jackie Stewart's last F1 car before he
retired. Stewart won the South African Grand Prix in this
car and it was later driven by Francois Cevert, taking 7 2nd place
finishes in 1973. |

Junior Johnson was even there to drive this historic Chevorlet 150
stock car from the
old days of Daytona Beach races on the sand. The car was entered by
General Motors.

Jenson Button in the 2004 B.A.R. Honda 006. He won one pole and a
2nd place in the San Marino GP in 2004. Button finished 3rd in
the championship in 2004.

The Aston Martin DB9 that ran Le Mans the week before the
Goodwood event. It was faster than the Corvettes that won the
class but fell back with small mechanical problems.

Rene Arnoux with Renault's first Formula 1 car, a 1.5 liter turbo
charged version. It won one Grands Prix race, the French Grand
Prix in 1979

Lord March and the 1961 Porsche 718.
|

John Surtees in the Honda RA 3000, built in 1967. With 12
cylinders and 3 liters the car made 420 bhp. Surtees won the 1967
Italian GP driving this car.

The 2005 Le Mans Winning Audi R8.
It won Le Mans less than 1 week before it arrived at Goodwood.

Mercury
Marauder entered by Brent Hajek from Oklahoma. Driven
by Parnelli Jones in 1963. The car won 11 poles, 10 wins
and 2 seconds in 21 starts that year. It also won the Pikes Peak
Hillclimb in 1963 and 1964

1954 Jaguar D-Type Prototype. Owned by the jaguar Daimler
Heritage Trust. This was the first D Jag built, with a
short nose and a C-Type chassis number.

Richard Atwood driving the BRM P261. Built for Jackie
Stewart, this car gave Stewart his first GP win at Monza in 1955.
