F1 Scuplture
Honda was the honored mark
Here 6 Honda F1 cars create a great mobile scuplture.  The cars were delicately balanced and would move up and down as a small counter weight  under each car would rotate.

Charles March, the Earl of March. driving a Porsche  718 Formula 1 car from 1961 that was driven then by Dan Gurney and Jo Bonnier
Peter with Car
Peter  Kitchak with his Targa Florio winning 1973 Martini Porsche RSR.  The only Porsche production based car  invited to Goodwood this year and consistantly  referred to during the event as the Best 911 in the World.
with 917s
In the assembly area with  two Porsche 917s. A 917LH on the left and a Gulf 917 K on the right.  The Gulf car was driven by most of the important drivers of the day and won many races.

Hondas on sticks

In Assembly with Ferrari
A 3.5 liter v-12, 1993 Ferrari F93A.  Ferrari was struggling at the time and the best this car ever did was a third place in Hungary
Number Plate
Each car got an offical number plate for the event.  Often they were the model number of the car.  This is the number we had on the RSR.
959
A 1985 Paris Dakar Porsche 959 which was driven by Rene Mentges.  This car was normally aspirated and dropped out of the event with mechanical problems.
The Crowd
The crowds were unbelieveable.  The event was sold out with more than 125,000 tickets sold. This was a view from just outside our garage area.


John Player F1
a 1974 Lotus Cotsworth 76.  3 Liter V8.
The car was designed by Ralph Bellamy.
Other than a 4th place finish in Germany it proved quite unsuccessful and was abandoned.
Rally Cars
A Audi Quatro "Pikes Peak on the left and  a 2005 Ford Focus WRC car.  Ford's  1984 Super Van  on the right.

The Boys at Goodwood

Red Bull
2005 Red Bull Cosworth  RB1.
The Car driven by David Coulthard in this years F1 Championship.  Red Bull is the successor to 2004's Jaguar team.
Renault F1
Renault R24 driven in this event by F1 Championship leader Fernando Alonso.
Mercedes of Mass
Mercedes Benz 1954 W196  that  Juan Manuel Fangio won two world  championships  with in 1954 and 1955.  Driven by Jochen Mass .
David and Craig
David Moore (L)  went along to help Peter and Craig Bennett went to Jim Oppenheimer.  Taking a break with an 1957 Le Mans winning Aston Martin DBR1 in the background.
Michael
Mike Oppenheimer was in his element, collecting autographs from the world's great drivers.  Here, imitating the Earl of March, he gives a royal wave to one of his biggest fans.  (But he didn't ask me to sign his poster???)
Jim Arrives
Jim Oppenheimer is greeted as he arrives at the party.  By the way, that's Mrs. Sterling Moss in the background.
Wacky Racers
Wacky Racers were also present.  Designed to entertain the kids they were also used as shuttles the night of the ball.

Call to Dinner
The Veuve Cliquot Chamagne reception on the lawn was interrupted by biker's telling everyone it was time for dinner.
Godiva
Lady Godiva, I think it was, that climbed aboard  one of the bikes to get a ride to dinner.
Reflection in a Bike
A biker's tattoo and a mirror reflecting elegant dresses.  The red reflection on the left is Patricia, standing next to" Lady Godiva"
Accross the Pond
After going "across the pond" to get to  the event,  we took this picture across the Earl's pond at the assembled crowd in formal atire.

Peter and Patricia
Peter and Patricia arrive for the ball at the entrance to the Goodwood House. 
Hanes
Chuck Haines with his wife joined our table at the ball.  He  was there with his Eagle-Offenhauser Sugarripe  Special that was 2nd at Indy in 1973.  Bobby Unser drove the car at the event.
Fireworks
The show after dinner was worth the trip all by it self.  A combination of lights, water and fireworks never seemed to stop.  A history of racing was projected on a 200 foot  wide screen created by spraying water into the air.
New Friends from Oklahoma
Brent Hajek (center) and his frind "Ox" joined us at dinner.  Brent brought  the 1963 Mercury Marauder that was raced by Parnelli Jones .  The car was the USAC chamion in 1964 and also won Pikes Peak.  See car photo below

Peter
Toad Hall's Peter Kitchak and his famous date, Patricia Kitchak.  They were married on year after the 1973 car that Peter was driving at Goodwood was constructed.
Jim at Dinner
Jim laughs at the "spaghetti " on the desert.    Is it Spaghetti on Viagra?
Mercedes
The 1909 Blitzen Benz, Mercedes Benz.   The car had a 21.5 Liter  4 cylinder motor that made 200 HP.
At the right is a better  photo of the engine.  In 1911 this car set a world speed record of 228 Km per hour (141 mph) over a flying mile.

Interestingly enough, the Mercedes mechanic working on the car  told me that it has been "restored" and spare pieces made in the US.

GT Championship in 1997.

Klaus Bischoff
Klaus Bischof,  head of the Porsche Museum,  was pitted next to us and drove the Porsche 804  F1 car that  gave Porsche its only F1 win in 1962 with Dan Gurney driving.

The Millstream Hotel in Bosham.  Toad Hall's headquarters during the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

jochim Maas
Famed Mercedes and Porsche driver Jochen Mass was there to drive a 1954 Mercedes W196 and sign autographs.

A Toyota F1 car ready for its run up the hill.
Motos
A modern day GP bike and a Paris/Dakar long distance "raid" motorcycle on the ready.
Super
Near the entry to the Driver's Club was a Bently Thunderbolt  with a 27 liter  V12 engine that makes 750 bhp and 1550 lbs of torque.
On the way
On the way to the driver's club was a famous old Ferrari, note the red carpet on the left. for the driver's to walk on.
Alonso
Fernando Alonso was there to drive on of the current Renault F1 cars.  He always had a crowd around him (and a body guard)
Motorcycle racers
Lined up with their own bikes and their original leathers were many of the great Motorcycle racers of all time.

DCoulthard
David Coulthard driving the Tyrrell-
Cosworth 006.  Jackie Stewart's last F1 car before he retired.   Stewart won the South African Grand Prix in this car and it was later driven by Francois Cevert, taking 7 2nd place finishes in 1973.
Junior Johnson
Junior Johnson was even there to drive this historic Chevorlet 150 stock car from the old days of Daytona Beach races on the sand. The car was entered by General Motors.
Sato?
Jenson Button in the 2004 B.A.R. Honda 006. He won one pole  and a 2nd place in the San Marino GP in 2004.  Button finished 3rd in the championship in 2004.

Aston Martin
The Aston Martin DB9  that ran Le Mans the week before the Goodwood event.  It was faster than the Corvettes that won the class but fell back with small mechanical problems.
Renne Arnoux
Rene Arnoux with Renault's first Formula 1 car, a 1.5 liter turbo charged version.  It won one Grands Prix race, the French Grand Prix in 1979
March and the Porsche
Lord March and the 1961 Porsche 718.
John Surtees
John Surtees in the Honda  RA 3000, built in 1967.  With 12 cylinders and 3 liters the car made 420 bhp. Surtees won the 1967 Italian GP driving this car.
Audi
The  2005 Le Mans Winning Audi R8.
It won Le Mans less than 1 week before it arrived at Goodwood.
Mercury MeteorMercury Marauder  entered by Brent Hajek from Oklahoma.   Driven by Parnelli Jones in 1963.  The car won 11 poles, 10 wins  and 2 seconds in 21 starts that year.  It also won the Pikes Peak Hillclimb in 1963 and 1964
D Jag
1954 Jaguar D-Type Prototype.  Owned by the jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust.  This was the first D Jag  built, with a short nose and a C-Type chassis number.
BRM
Richard Atwood driving the BRM  P261.  Built for Jackie Stewart, this car gave Stewart his first GP win at Monza in 1955.
